Change Computer Name on Ubuntu 11.10

If you’re a new user to Ubuntu, these are some of the basic tasks you may have to learn over time. Tasks such as changing computer name, workgroup and passwords. We’ll do our best to always cover these topics and make this blog a place for new Ubuntu users to come to and find everything he/she needs to manage and configure Ubuntu. In this brief tutorial, I’ll show you how to quickly change your computer name as well as your computer workgroup in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).

Objectives:

  • Change Computer Name in Ubuntu
  • Change Workgroup Name
  • Enjoy!

To get started, press Ctrl – Alt – T to open Terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to open the hostname file.

sudo gedit /etc/hostname

hostname_oneiric

Next, change whatever in this file to whatever you want it to be and save.

Next, run the commands below to open the hosts file.

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

hostname_oneiric_2

Then change the 2nd line to reflect the new name and save.

Finally, to change your system workgroup name, run the command below to edit samba smb.conf file.

sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

hostname_oneiric_4

Find the line shown below and change the workgroup name to whatever you want it to be and save.
