If you’re a new user to Ubuntu, these are some of the basic tasks you may have to learn over time. Tasks such as changing computer name, workgroup and passwords. In this brief tutorial, I’ll show you how to quickly change your computer name as well as your computer workgroup in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).

To get started, press Ctrl – Alt – T to open Terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to open the hostname file.
sudo gedit /etc/hostname
Next, change whatever in this file to whatever you want it to be and save.
Next, run the commands below to open the hosts file.
sudo gedit /etc/hosts
Then change the 2nd line to reflect the new name and save.
Finally, to change your system workgroup name, run the command below to edit samba smb.conf file.
sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
Find the line shown below and change the workgroup name to whatever you want it to be and save.
